Our skin is the largest organ in the human body; it’s literally its foundation. Taking care of our skin is so important, and it does not require a ton of effort or time.
You don’t need to be a professional to care for your skin at home. It is all about a few good habits and routines. You also do not need a 10-step, 30-minute regimen. Maintaining consistency with simple habits and routines is how you can achieve benefits and see results.
Simple habits I like to follow at home include changing my pillowcase at least once a week. Over time, bacteria and dead skin accumulate on pillowcases, and we don’t want to put our clean faces in that. Regularly cleaning our phone screens is also a great idea since we hold our phones to our faces daily.
Maintaining a healthy diet and water intake plays a huge role in the condition of our skin. I also try not to wash my face in the shower as the water tends to be too warm and can dry out the skin.
Skincare routines do not have to be complicated unless you genuinely want to spend the time. Remember, a simple routine is better than no routine at all.
With skincare, my personal rule is, “If you love something, do not set it free; let it be.” If you use a product that you have loved for a long time and that works for your skin, then there is no reason to change it.
Any new routine can be challenging to start, especially skincare routines. Ideally, everyone should have a morning and evening routine. If that sounds scary, start small.
When someone tells me they have never had a routine and is unsure if they can even stick to one, I tell them to start with the basics. That includes a cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF every morning and evening. That can be it!
If someone wants to add a serum to their routine, I usually suggest vitamin C. Here at the Aesthetics Institute, we have a fantastic vitamin C serum from Circadia that is highly affordable and works great for all skin types.
This serum also includes hyaluronic acid, which does a great job of drawing hydration to the skin. It also contains vitamin B5, which is soothing and regenerating. Everyone’s skin can benefit from a vitamin C serum, as it is a powerful antioxidant that also provides hydration, brightening, and free radical protection.
It is super important to use a moisturizer that you feel comfortable wearing, and that works for you. Otherwise, most people end up not moisturizing at all because they think it makes them oily.
Not correctly moisturizing your skin can cause trans epidermal water loss, potentially damaging your skin barrier. Some of my favorite moisturizers we use here at the school are AquaPorin from Circadia and Renewal Lotion/Cream from Epionce.
Lastly, an effective SPF is crucial to everyone’s skincare routine. Everyone should wear some kind of sun protection every day, regardless of season or weather. A personal favorite of mine is Light Day SPF 37 from Circaida, which we also use regularly at the school.
Yes, starting a new skincare routine can be scary, but it truly doesn’t have to be. Following these easy steps is a great way to get started. Another great way is to book a relaxing and soothing facial at your local spa or esthetics school and ask your esthetician for tips and ideas on how to best care for your skin at home.
There is no wrong way to get started, and I wish you the best of luck with healthy and beautiful skin!
